What comes to mind when you think of a boudoir photoshoot? Although boudoir has been increasingly trendy, there are a lot of misconceptions about what boudoir is and what happens during a photoshoot.
So let’s clear up some 5 top misconceptions about boudoir photography!

1.) Boudoir is about being sexy
Will you look and feel sexy in your boudoir photos? Definitely. But boudoir photography is so much more, at least for those of us at Belle Marie Boudoir. There are boudoir photographers that will focus on getting those sexy photos, but so much of
what make’s boudoir special is in the experience and how you feel from that first consultation to when you look at your album years after.

As a women owned boudoir studio, we have all felt the pressures of looking a certain way and keeping up with the impossible beauty standards. Woman after woman come to us sharing their struggles with body image and low confidence. It’s sadly a common feeling among women, and they reach out to us hoping for an experience that will boost their confidence.
For Belle Marie Boudoir, a boudoir photoshoot is not just about “sexy” photos, it’s an opportunity for women to feel empowered in their bodies and see that they are strong, beautiful, AND sexy just the way they are.
2.) Boudoir photos are something you gift to someone else
Because many people believe boudoir photos are just sexy photos, the expectation is to give them to an significant other or spouse to enjoy. Boudoir photos are popular gifts for weddings, partner’s birthdays, or anniversaries.
As we’ve learned; however, boudoir is so much more than looking sexy. When you’re in our studio, your comfort, confidence, and happiness is our number 1 priority. And when that is the focus, you fall even more in love with the photos.
When you feel your most confident and beautiful DURING the photoshoot, you’ll feel that boost long after any time you look through your images. We’ve always hear from women who schedule the photoshoot with the plan to gift the images, that they ended up so happy they did it for themselves. They realize a boudoir photoshoot was the best gift they could have given themselves. The fact that they also get an amazing gift for their partner ends up just being the bonus.
We even had one client come back to order a second album because she loved the photos so much she didn’t want too share the album with her husband.

3.) Boudoir is something any photographer can do
Boudoir is trending. Over the last decade there has been a boom in people looking to take boudoir photos and photographers have taken note. There have been so many talented boudoir studios across Minnesota and especially in the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro. There are also a lot of photographers who started offering boudoir onto of their other photography services without fully understanding the unique needs of boudoir sessions.

Boudoir is unlike many other type of photography. You’re in lingerie, or nothing, and often feeling very nervous especially if this is your first boudoir. The posing is different, the lighting, the way to communicate to help our clients feel at ease and confident. It’s a different world from family, newborn, maternity, or wedding photography.
Boudoir is all we do. It’s something we’ve spent years building up our studio and craft to offer the best boudoir photography experience possible. We’ve built a studio with multiple sets to give you options to customize your shoot. A massive 500+ lingerie style closet to fit all body sizes and type. Olivia has spent years working with women and learning from other experts within the boudoir world to be able to make that connection with women, make them feel comfortable from the start, and to effortlessly guide them through the posing.
If you want the type of boudoir photoshoot that leaves you changed and feeling on top of the world, you’re going to want someone that knows boudoir better than anyone. Belle Marie Boudoir has been one of the top rated boudoir photography studios in Minnesota for years because of the dedicated experience we can offer and the work we put into making every photoshoot magical.
4.) You should wait until you reach [insert personal goal here]
We hear it all time. “I’ve wanted to do a boudoir for years but first I need to lose weight…” or reach this or that personal goal. There are always reasons to keep putting off a boudoir photoshoot. People will get trapped in this waiting cycle, thinking they can only commit to a boudoir session when they’re the ideal version of themselves. Until they feel more confident in their skin.
But there’s no need to wait. We’re always going to have those little things we want to change about ourselves. And boudoir isn’t just for people to celebrate already feeling confident about yourself, it’s a great starting point for a self-confidence journey. I’ve never heard from a client that they wished they waited, but I hear time and time again that they wished they had done a boudoir earlier.
5.) Boudoir Photography is too expensive, I can’t afford it
I’ll be honest that boudoir isn’t cheap. It is a luxury service and we have a lot of expenses in order to give our clients that top tier experience. The sticker shock can lead a lot of people to write of boudoir entirely, assuming it’s just not something they can afford.

Most of our clients are not wealthy and usually don’t have thousands of dollars to drop on a whim for photography. They’ll
save and budget because it’s something important to them and see boudoir photography as an investment in themselves.
With some planning, we’re able to work out packages or payment plans to work with most people’s budget. Check out this blog post to learn more about how financing packages works.
