Tattooed and Empowered: Amber’s Minnesota Boudoir Photoshoot

What do Olivia and I love almost as much as boudoir photography? Tattoos. Our own, our clients’, honestly all of them. So when tattoo artist Amber walked into the Belle Marie Boudoir studio covered in beautiful tattoos herself, we were immediately excited. By the end of the session, Olivia had plans for a new tattoo and Amber had a gallery full of stunning boudoir photos. I’d call that a successful day.

This week, we’re diving into Amber’s boudoir experience and how stepping outside her comfort zone helped her feel more confident in her body and herself.

Her Why

When we talked with Amber during her consultation call back in December, she explained that she had never done a boudoir photoshoot before. She had been working on becoming more comfortable and confident in her body, and booking a boudoir session felt like the perfect way to challenge herself and continue building that confidence.

She came into the experience knowing there were parts of her body she still felt insecure about. But instead of trying to hide those things, she wanted to learn how to embrace and love every part of herself.

Fast Friends

Even though this was completely new and outside her comfort zone, Amber surprisingly wasn’t very nervous when the big day arrived. She came into the studio excited to see what the boudoir experience was really all about.

While Mackenzie worked on her hair and boudoir photography makeup, we spent a lot of time talking about her work as a tattoo artist and admiring her portfolio. During one of those conversations, Amber and Olivia realized they had actually seen each other recently at a tattoo shop before ever officially meeting.

“It’s funny, I saw Olivia at the tattoo shop she went to prior to knowing she was the one that would be taking the photos! I enjoyed bonding over tattoos with her and knitting/crocheting with Tia! I really enjoyed all of the conversations we had!”

Olivia and I both have our fair share of tattoos, so we loved bonding with Amber over our shared love of tattoo art. I also enjoyed talking with her about knitting and crocheting. One of the best parts of working in boudoir photography is seeing what connections naturally happen during that hair and makeup. Whether it’s tattoos, books, hobbies, or life experiences, by the time hair and makeup is finished, it no longer feels like you’re spending the day with strangers.

By the time Amber was ready to choose outfits with Olivia, they already felt like friends. Since this was her first boudoir photoshoot, Amber decided to completely go with the flow and let Olivia help guide her lingerie and accessory choices from our client closet.

After lots of laughs, some gorgeous boudoir portraits, and even a few impromptu headshots, Amber finally got to see herself the way we saw her from the moment she walked through the studio doors.

“It was crazy to see me in those photos. Olivia definitely knows how to work the camera! I was like damn I can actually pose in certain ways to hide aspects of my body I’m not the fondest of, but they all turned out great!”
