Olivia has three rules clients should remember before coming in for their boudoir photoshoot:
Clean and dry hair
No spray tans
No chipped nail polish
Today, let’s talk about rule number three.

Your nails may not be the main focus of your boudoir photoshoot, but clean and manicured nails absolutely make a difference in your final images, especially during close-up detail shots. That doesn’t mean you need to spend a ton of money on extensions before your session, but you should make sure your nails are photoshoot-ready before your boudoir experience.
Not a Fan of Nail Polish? No Problem!
If you never paint your nails and wouldn’t feel like yourself with a manicure, there’s no pressure to get your nails done before your boudoir session. Just spend a little time tidying them up the day before. File them into an even shape, gently push back your cuticles, and apply hand lotion or cuticle oil if you have it.
That quick cleanup can go a long way in making your hands look polished and photo-ready during your boudoir photoshoot.
DIY Nail Polish or Press-On Nails
For those of you who want to do something a little extra with your nails, there are plenty of options without breaking the
bank. The easiest route is applying a fresh coat of nail polish a day or two before your boudoir photoshoot.
Start by filing your nails and pushing back your cuticles. Wiping each nail with an alcohol pad beforehand helps remove oils and improves wear time. For the best results, apply a base coat to clean, dry nails. Apply two to three thin coats of color and finish with a quick-drying top coat. Thin layers help prevent bubbling and improve drying time. If you accidentally get polish on your skin, keep a small brush, cuticle stick, or cotton swab nearby with acetone for cleanup.

If you’re using gel polish, cleanup is especially important. Never cure gel polish on your skin, and remove any excess immediately to help prevent irritation or allergies.
Try waiting two to five minutes between coats so the polish can properly set before adding the next layer. Once you finish your top coat, allow your nails at least 10 minutes to dry before using cuticle oil to finish everything off. Be extra gentle with your hands for a couple hours to avoid smudging, but if you do smudge you can try to smooth it out with a little acetone on a brush or just gently pressing the polish back into place with your finger pad.

Not confident in your nail painting skills? Press-on nails are a great option for boudoir photography. I ignored press-ons for years because I remembered the flimsy versions that popped off after an hour. Modern press-ons are completely different. With proper prep and sizing, they can look amazing and last for weeks.
Start by trimming your nails short, pushing back your cuticles, and cleaning your nails with alcohol wipes to remove oils. Proper sizing is key. Avoid choosing nails that are too large because they tend to look less natural and are more likely to lift. When they fit correctly, press-on nails can hold up surprisingly well during your boudoir photoshoot.
Treat Yourself to a Professional Manicure
Although I usually do my own manicures (you should see my insane nail polish collection), every once and I while I like to treat myself to a set from a professional, especially before a boudoir session. Depending on the salon or nail tech, you may have options like regular polish, gel manicures, nail art, acrylic extensions, builder gel, or Gel-X nails.
Before booking, take time to research the salon or nail artist. Not every nail tech specializes in extensions, detailed nail art, or cuticle work. Look through their social media, website portfolio, and reviews to make sure their style matches what you’re looking for.
Boudoir Nail Inspiration
French tips or soft nude and pink shades are classic choices for boudoir photography. They look clean, elegant, and natural while still feeling polished and elevated.
Red nails are another timeless option if you want something bold and glamorous. They’re especially perfect if you’re going for a retro-inspired boudoir vibe.
Dark and vampy nails are personally my favorite, especially for dramatic boudoir photography. Deep purples, navy blues, dark reds, and black polish pair beautifully with moodier lighting sets and longer nail shapes.
Whether you love short natural nails or dramatic extensions with bold nail art, the most important thing is choosing something that feels true to your personal style. As long as your nails are clean and free of chipped polish, you can style them however makes you feel the most confident during your boudoir photoshoot.
